TIACA chair says sustainability budgets are at risk

TIACA Chairperson Roos Bakker said rising fuel costs and easing external pressure are putting air cargo sustainability spending at risk, arguing that fuel efficiency and margin protection make green investment easier to defend.

Speaking at the TIACA Air Cargo Forum in Miami, Bakker said sustainability is often the first line to be questioned when fuel costs spike and external pressure eases. She said high fuel prices strengthen the case for green investment because route optimisation, electrified ground handling and better load factors pay back faster when fuel is expensive.

Her comments followed TIACA’s 2026 Sustainability Insights report. The report found that 95 percent of members have CEO backing for sustainability, external pressure is at its lowest since 2021, and the share of organisations saying sustainability is part of their culture is 44 percent in the Americas versus 87 percent in Asia.

Bakker also set out TIACA’s role in a crisis year: acting as an information hub on closures, rerouting and customs changes; bringing the supply chain together in task forces on hub congestion, rerouting and surcharge transparency; and giving governments data-backed asks on overflight coordination and customs facilitation.
