Swissport International has signed binding transaction agreements to form a strategic joint venture with Jakarta-based UNEX Aviation Services, acquiring a stake in the company. The deal marks Swissport's entry into Indonesia and strengthens its presence in Asia-Pacific. UNEX Aviation Services, founded in 2003 in its current structure, has more than four decades of experience in the Indonesian aviation industry. It currently provides air cargo warehousing and related services to international and domestic airlines at Jakarta's Soekarno-Hatta International Airport and holds nationwide ground handling licences.
The joint venture will initially focus on air cargo warehousing. The partners plan to broaden the service portfolio to include ramp handling and passenger services, and to expand operations to additional key airports across the Indonesian archipelago.
Indonesia is one of the world's fastest-growing aviation markets. IATA forecasts it will become the fourth-largest globally by 2030. The archipelago spans over 17,000 islands and has a population of more than 280 million. In 2024, Indonesia recorded approximately 101 million domestic and international passengers, with air freight volumes reaching roughly one million tonnes.
Swissport's Asia-Pacific operations handled approximately 25 million passengers, 632,000 flights and 450,000 tonnes of cargo in 2025, supported by 10,000 employees. The region saw an 11.9% increase in intra-Asian international traffic and 8.4% growth in Asia-Pacific air cargo demand in 2025. According to Swissport President and CEO Warwick Brady, the joint venture is a significant step in expanding the cargo business and strengthening ground-handling presence in Southeast Asia. UNEX Founder and CEO Budiman Tedja said the partnership will help expand the service offering and operational capabilities in Indonesia.
