Miami International Airport’s cargo hub: record volumes, e-commerce growth and expansion plans

Miami International Airport handled 3.4 million tonnes of cargo in 2025, with flowers, seafood, pharmaceuticals and e-commerce underpinning its regional trade role as it plans infrastructure expansion.

According to the material, MIA handled 3.4 million tonnes of cargo in 2025, marking its sixth consecutive year of record growth. Cut flowers were the largest import commodity group by volume at 409,845 tonnes, mainly from Colombia and Ecuador; fresh and frozen seafood accounted for 244,199 tonnes, and fresh produce contributed 90,944 tonnes. In origin-and-destination exports, industrial machinery led at 78,948 tonnes, followed by electronic devices at 49,602 tonnes and pharmaceuticals at 14,962 tonnes. These figures do not cover every shipment: more than half of the airport’s international freight in 2025 was in transit.

CBP estimates cited by the airport put individual parcel shipments valued at less than $800 at about 1.5 million in 2021 and 140 million in 2025, with most of them e-commerce shipments. MIA is supporting CBP’s plans for a Centralized Examination Station just outside the airport perimeter, projected to open in early 2027. The facility is intended to support high-volume screening and ease congestion on airport premises.

MIA has held IATA Pharma Hub status since 2015; in 2025, pharmaceutical trade through the airport was valued at $8.96 billion and totalled 16,205 tonnes. In early 2026, Air China Cargo launched three weekly flights between Shanghai Pudong and Miami, the first scheduled service of any type from mainland China. MIA is finalising a phased Cargo Development Plan that envisages raising on-airport warehouse space from 2.8 million to 4 million square feet by 2044 and annual cargo capacity to 5.3 million tonnes. A proposed $400 million Vertically Integrated Cargo Community facility is no longer part of the plans after its developers suspended the project.
